The DC Office of Attorney General (OAG) advocates for residents every day both locally and nationally, including by pursuing aggressive efforts to ensure tech companies follow the law. These companies have grown massively in recent years, and some of them have products that could go far to help support residents in their everyday lives. But unfortunately, we have also seen unacceptable abuses far too often by Big Tech and other technology companies.

OAG has learned that some individuals are trying to profit from this pandemic by reselling COVID-19 tests on craigslist and other peer-to-peer sites. Consumers should avoid purchasing COVID-19 tests from unauthorized retailers or sellers.

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) works every day to stand up for District workers, including by fighting wage theft, protecting workers’ rights and making sure they get the wages and fair treatment they deserve, and holding employers accountable if they mistreat workers or do not follow workers’ rights laws.

Submit a Consumer Complaint

OAG Consumer Mediation Program

OCP mediates consumer complaints when the consumer is a DC resident, or when the business or landlord is located or headquartered in the District of Columbia. This is a free service.

OCP helps consumers contact the business and work to resolve the dispute, without going to court. OCP does not offer individual legal representation.

New Hire Reporting

Federal and DC law requires employers to report newly hired or re-hired employees to District of Columbia Directory of New Hires.

The New Hire Directory works with employers to help ensure that all new hires are reported as required. TheFederal Office of Child Support Services (OCSS)provides states and the District with a quarterly report containing information regarding employers who may not have properly reported in previous quarters.Using the federal report, the DC Directory of New Hires engages in outreach to employers who may be non-compliant in reporting their new hires, provides information on the reporting requirements, and assists the employers in achieving compliance.

Employer Registration

Employers should report each newly hired or re-hired DC employee to the District of Columbia Directory of New Hires.

New employers can register atNew User Registrationto submit new-hire reporting online. A federal employer identification number (FEIN) and a valid email address are needed for registration. In the alternative, an employer may submit new-hire reports by mail, using the contact information below:

Experienced Advocate to Head Office of the Attorney General’s New Public Advocacy Division

WASHINGTON, D. C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine announced that Robyn R. Bender, an experienced advocate and former Assistant Deputy Attorney General and Interim Chief Deputy Attorney General at the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office, will join D.C.’s Office of the Attorney General (OAG) to lead the new Public Advocacy Division.

Attorney General Applauds Passage of Bill Expanding District’s Ability to Hold Neglectful Landlords Accountable

WASHINGTON, D. C. – Attorney General Karl A. Racine applauds the Council’s passage of a bill that expands the District’s ability to hold landlords accountable if their failure to meet maintenance obligations forces tenants out of their homes. The bill empowers the District’s Office of the Tenant Advocate (OTA) to recover costs of emergency assistance to tenants from a housing provider if that provider’s neglect caused their tenants to be displaced. It also allows OTA to impose a lien on the landlord to collect unpaid reimbursem*nts for such assistance to tenants.
