COUPEVILLE, Wash. (AP) A SWAT team on Saturday stormed a house where a heavily armed neoNazi sought in the wounding of an FBI agent was holed up, but the team was repulsed in a gun battle with the man, the FBI said. "We drew fire, we returned fire," said FBI agent Joseph Smith. "However, there was no apprehension and, to our knowledge, no injuries." The Special Weapons and Tactics Team, whose members had blackened faces and wore fatigues, made the assault shortly before nightfall to try to force the surrender of fugitive Robert T. Mathews, who authorities believe has been in the house since Friday, Smith said.

Prior to the assault, authorities fired canister after canister of tear gas into the house on 50-mile-long Whidbey Island for three hours, he said. "After that failed to bring results, we put the entry team in," he said. He said did not know the number of SWAT team members, but there "weren't that many." He also said he did not know the type of weapons used or number of shots fired. The tear gas barrage began at 11 a.m. after negotiations between the FBI and Mathews broke down, said Smith, who was in Seattle.

During the night, floodlights bathed the house on the rural island 0 miles northwest of Seattle. Residents of nearby homes were evacuated, and for 112 hours the Coast Guard halted vessel traffic: on Admiralty Inlet, the only shipping channel to Puget Sound. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge and two ferries. Mathews, 31, has been sought for questioning since Nov. 24, when he escaped from about 20 FBI agents surrounding a Portland, motel.

Agent Arthur Hensel was wounded in the knee, and Mathews was believed to have been wounded in the hand as he fled. The incident began when agents tried to arrest Mathews' room companion, Gary Lee Yarbrough. Yarbrough was arrested and has been accused of ambushing and shooting at three agents Oct. 18 near Sandpoint, Idaho. Mathews was described as armed and dangerous by Assistant FBI Director Bill Baker in Washington, D.C.

A family source said Mathews has "a tendency toward being a martyr for his In his Metaline Falls, Mathews' wife, Debbie, said her husband was "an excellent family man" and father. Hijackers Threaten To Kill More Hostages In Tehran By The Associated Press Hijackers who have killed four hostages on a Kuwaiti airliner in Tehran threatened Saturday to kill others, and an American passenger pleaded with officials to "prevent further killing" by meeting the sky pirates' demands, Iran's news agency said. Iran's official Islamic Republic News Agency also said the hijackers released 39 more passengers. The news agency quoted the hijackers as saying those released were "innocent," but it gave no further information. Eighteen people, including the four hijackers, remained on the plane, IRNA said.

Before they released the passengers, the hijackers told airport control tower in Tehran that they intended to start killing more hostages if Kuwait did not meet their demands, the news agency said. They did not indicate when they would carry out the threat. The hijackers, who have said they killed two Americans and two Kuwaitis, on Friday named another American and three Kuwaitis as their next victims if Kuwait did not release 17 prisoners convicted of bombing French and U.S. embassies last December. Kuwait has refused the demand.

The hijackers said they planned to put all of the Americans on board on trial, but did not elaborate. The hijackers seized the airliner Tuesday on a flight from Kuwait to Pakistan and forced it to land in Tehran with 161 people aboard. Most have been released.
